BryanGarner(withwhomIagreeabout90percentofthetime,althoughheis
wrongoccasionally)claimsthatthisbattlewaslostinthe1980s,andIam
condemnedtoold‐fuss‐budgetstatusforinsistingonthedistinction.Hedevotes
almostonefullpageofGarner’sModernAmericanUsage tothecontroversy.
Despitewimpingoutandacceptingthelate‐20th‐centuryabuseof“hopefully,”
Garnerendswiththefollowingadmonition:
“Fourth,thoughthecontroversyswirlingaroundthisword
hassubsided,itisnowaSKUNKED TERM.Avoiditinallsenses
