CITI Program Research Training Courses FAQ
What is this new opportunity?
OSF HealthCare is announcing new training requirements that apply to all individuals involved in
research at OSF HealthCare. This opportunity demonstrates how the Values of OSF HealthCare
including Compassion and Stewardship are committed to compassionate research as we serve with
the greatest care and love. Therefore, OSF HealthCare is providing Mission Partners and other personnel
engaged in research access to nationally-recognized online training resources. These new offerings are
available regardless of the research personnel’s institutional affiliation.
When can I take advantage of this?
Immediately.
Are these training courses required?
Four core courses will be required for all individuals with a role in research projects effective September
1, 2017. The CITI training requirement applies to new research as well as currently approved research.
How do the training courses benefit me?
There are multiple benefits for using this resource:
Credentials: Completed training courses can be added to your CV /
resume.
Transferable: If you transition to another institution, these training
courses follow you outside of OSF HealthCare.
Personal: Regardless of your role (college student, physician, resident),
these training courses provided through OSF HealthCare allow you to easily
invest in yourself.
Achievement: Meet our Goal of Service Excellence and Patient Experience
by learning the most advanced ways to conduct research projects and protect human
subjects.
Who can take these online training courses?
All OSF HealthCare Mission Partners, IRB members and any other personnel with a role in conducting
research can take advantage of these free online training courses. This includes non-affiliates with OSF
HealthCare, where the education courses would normally cost the individual significantly if paid for
themselves.
How long does each online course take to complete?
It depends on each training course. The courses might take one to three hours to complete, while
completing all four (4) mandatory courses might take up to 10 hours to complete.
Great! How can I register and enroll in these courses?
To take the courses, you will need a CITI Program account affiliated with OSF HealthCare. If you already
have a CITI Program account, you can log in here. If you don’t have a CITI Program account,
register by following the easy steps! (NOTE: make sure to include a secondary, non-OSF email when you
register.) More detailed CITI Program Training Instructions are also available, which include steps for
registering a new CITI account, adding a new affiliation to an existing CITI account, and enrolling in the
appropriate CITI training courses for OSF HealthCare.
What training courses are offered once I register?
The four required CITI Program training courses for all personnel involved in conducting research at OSF
HealthCare are:
Conflicts of Interest (COI)
Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
Human Subjects Research (HSR)
Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)
Additionally, voluntary supplemental courses are also available for: Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC);
Clinical Trial Billing Compliance (CTBC); and Essentials of Research Administration (ERA).
What if I already have a CITI Program account and previously completed training
courses through another institution?
Depending on the specific individual modules included in the training courses, and how long ago the
courses were completed, some previously completed CITI training may be applied to the OSF HealthCare
training requirements. The CITI Program online system will recognize previously completed training
modules that are also included in the required courses for OSF HealthCare and transfer over completion
information for them. In this instance, you would then only have to complete modules in the OSF
required courses that were not included in the previously completed courses. See the CITI Program
Training Instructions for directions on how to add a new OSF Healthcare affiliation to your existing CITI
account.
