Northwest League Origins
The Northwest League has now completed its 58th
season since its inception in 1955. Including its
predecessor leagues, the NWL has existed since 1901.
Because major-league baseball did not arrive on the
west coast until the late 1950‘s, minor-league baseball
prospered in the Northwest. Cities like Tacoma played
the same role Eugene, Salem-Keizer, and Spokane do
today. The Pacific Northwest league began in 1901-
02, the Pacific National League operated in 1903-04,
with the Northwestern League operating from 1905-
18. The Pacific Coast International League followed
from 1919-22 before a 15-year drought occurred. The
Western International League followed in 1937 and
lasted until 1954 when it disappeared at a Friday-
Saturday meeting and was replaced by the Northwest
League on Sunday. Charter members of the present
Northwest League include Eugene, Spokane, and
Yakima. The predecessor leagues operated under the
Class B designation while the modern league is called
short-season Class A.

A Look Back at 2013
The Boise Hawks ended the regular season with 41-35 record, going 21-17 in the first half and 20-18 in the second half, earning a South Division
playoff spot for the second best overall record (Salem-Keizer won the first and second half titles). The Hawks swept S-K in the divisional playoffs, before
losing a tough three-game series to Vancouver in the League Championship Series, falling 5-0 in the winner-take-all title game.
The Hawks were again among the top hitting teams in the NWL, leading the league in batting average (.269), hits (690), and home runs (50) - with Kevin
Encarnacion winning the NWL batting title with a .355 average and Yasiel Balaguert leading the league in RBI with 48.
Encarnacion, an outfielder, had a banner campaign in a half-season in Boise, adding nine doubles, eight homers, and 30 RBI in 42 games. Danny
Lockhart (.390 23 RBI), Jacob Rogers (.278 8 HR 47 RBI), Carlos Penalver (.261 1 HR 21 RBI), and David Bote (.250 6 HR 31 RBI) were the everyday
infielders - while first-round pick Kris Bryant (.354 4 HR 16 RBI) was dominant in his three-week stint. Balaguert (.261 8 HR 48 RBI) was a steady right
fielder, with Rony Rodriguez (.270 3 HR 23 RBI) and Shawon Dunston Jr. (.290 1 HR 19 RBI) platooning in left, and Cael Brockmeyer (.271 0 HR 14
RBI), Lance Rymel (.253 1 HR 18 RBI), and Justin Marra (.224 6 HR 16 RBI) sharing time behind the plate.
The pitching staff posted a solid 3.58 team ERA - lowest in years, thanks to starters Paul Blackburn (2-3 3.33 ERA) and Dillon Maples (5-2 2.14 ERA),
who both turned in stellar performances in the postseason. James Pugliese (4-3 2.32 ERA) was solid before a mid-season call-up, with Corbin Hoffner (2
-0 1.74 ERA), Jasvir Rakkar (4-1 3.58 ERA), Tyler Bremer (0-3 2.15 ERA, 7 saves), and Zack Godley (2-0 1.75 ERA) providing bullpen support.

Hawk Talk
The 2004 season marked the last time that the Boise Hawks won the
Northwest League championship, with some crazy moments happening
that season. The team was truly Road Warriors in August, as the squad
recorded an 8-3 record during the annual Western Idaho Fair road trip,
including a five-game sweep at Everett, to clinch the Eastern Division
pennant. Earlier that season, the Hawks won one of the stranger games
in franchise history in Yakima, as Boise committed a franchise worst nine
errors, but still gutted out a 6-5 victory in 11 innings, as current Oakland
Athletics reliever Jerry Blevins picked up the win. The team also played
the longest game of the Cubs’ era that July, as Ryan Norwood was
plunked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 16th inning to defeat
Everett, 9-8. That game also featured slugger Ryan Harvey setting a
franchise-record six times.

The 2003 team struggled to the worst record for a Boise Hawks squad
with a major league affiliate, however, the five-man starting rotation to
start the season featured a group who all went on to pitch in the Major
Leagues - Rocky Cherry (Chicago, Baltimore), Billy Petrick (Chicago), Sean
Marshall (Chicago, Cincinnati), Rich Hill (Chicago, Baltimore, Boston), and
Adalberto Mendez (Miami).
June 29, 1989 Hawks manager Mal Fichman was ejected in the sixth
inning of the game vs. the Salem Dodgers. However, Fichman changes
into the uniform of Humphrey the Hawk and returns to the field to instruct
the team. Ironically, the manager of the Dodgers was Tom Beyers who
later managed the Hawks.

August 7, 2010 The night will live in infamy as one of the weirdest
nights in Hawks history. Following a two hour rain delay, manager Jody
Davis pulls the team from the field in Everett due to “unplayable
conditions” - after left fielder Ryan Cuneo slips on the warning track
making a play on a fly ball. After another 30 minute delay, play resumed,
without the Hawks, and Boise would forfeit the Northwest League game to
the Aquasox, as Everett won the game by a score of 9-0.
